Dale Eugene Fox was born in Covington, Miami County, Ohio on October 5, 1909 the son of Louis H. and Bernice M. Fox. He attended Covington Public Schools and graduated from Covington High School in 1927.
He attended Defiance College for two years seeking a degree in Chemical Engineering. Transferring to Ohio State University he continued his studies and in the third year of his education, Dale changed his major to Pre Med. Upon graduation he was admitted to The Ohio State School of Medicine from which he graduated in 1936 with an M. D. degree.
After a year’s internship and a year of residency at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati he continued his training in Orthopedic Surgery at the Willis C. Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1941 he received a Master of Science Degree in Orthopedic Surgery from the University of Tennessee. Due to the start of World War II and the death of Dr. Campbell, he remained at the Willis C. Campbell Clinic as a staff member for another year.
In July 1942, Dr. Fox was commissioned a Captain in the Medical Department of the United States Army. He proudly served his country for thirty-four months in several battle zones, including four months on the Anzio Beachhead in Italy. After the war he was discharged from the Army as a Major.
He practiced Orthopedic Surgery in Cincinnati for forty-three years, finally retiring in 1989 after a distinguished career. During his career Dr. Fox brought many pioneering procedures to the Hamilton County area and was an early practitioner in the field of Sports Medicine. In that endeavor, he was a leading consultant to both the Cincinnati Reds and the Cincinnati Bengals.
On June 19, 1949 Dr. Fox married Elizabeth (Betty) Trautman, a union which lasted thirty-four years. They were the proud parents of a son and a daughter. They had one grandchild. Betty passed away in 1983 after a lengthy illness. He later married the former Adele Norman, this union continued until his death.
He was a member of the Rotary Club of Cincinnati and the Hyde Park Country Club.
Brother Fox was made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge No. 81 F. & A.M. in Cincinnati on June 17, 1950. He served as Worshipful Master in 1959.
He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Kilwinning Chapter No. 97 in 1955, was received as a Royal and Select Master in Cincinnati Council No.1 in 1962 and was created a Knight Templar in Cincinnati Commandery No.3 in 1956.
M. W. Brother Fox became a member of the Valley of Cincinnati, A. A. S. R. in 1950 and served as Commander-in-Chief of Ohio Consistory, S. P. R. S. in the years 1968-1970. He served on the Board of Trustees in the Valley of Cincinnati for twelve years.
He was crowned an honorary member of the Supreme Council, 33° in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 30, 1970.
Our distinguished Brother was a member of Syrian Shrine, A. A. O. N. M. S., Cincinnati Court No.7, Royal Order of Jesters and St. Columba Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine and was the recipient of the Honorary Legion of Honor in the Order of DeMolay.
Most Worshipful Brother Fox served the First Masonic District as a District Deputy Grand Master in 1964 and 1965.
In October of 1965 he was appointed Junior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge of Ohio by Most Worshipful Brother George F. DeSilver, then Grand Master. He was subsequently appointed Senior Grand Warden in 1966, Grand Marshal in 1967 and Grand Orator in 1968.
Most Worshipful Brother Fox was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1969, Senior Grand Warden in 1970, Deputy Grand Master in 1971. On October 20, 1972 in Columbus, Ohio he was elected Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Ohio and installed in that office October 21, 1972.
Most Worshipful Brother Dale Eugene Fox passed away on June 22, 1995 in Cincinnati. Memorial, Masonic and Scottish Rite Services were held on June 26, 1995 at The W. Mack Johnson & Anderson Funeral Home in East Walnut Hills, a suburb of Cincinnati. His remains will be interred in the garden of The Christ Hospital.
