1982 – Charles Baughman Moody

Charles Baughman Moody was born on September 3, 1916 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, the son of James Harvey and Della Baughman Moody. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from Zanesville High School in 1934.

In 1935 he enrolled at Park College, Parkville, Missouri, and completed two years there before transferring to Ohio State University. He graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree.

In November 1939, he was employed as a messenger at the main office of the Ohio National Bank of Columbus. After working in the credit department, he transferred to the Real Estate, Mortgage and Loan Department. Simultaneously he enrolled in the college of Law at Franklin University night school in 1946, and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Laws Degree. He was admitted to the Bar in 1951.

A transfer in July 1951 brought him to the Citizens National Bank in Zanesville as an assistant cashier. He graduated from the Graduate School of Banking of the University of Wisconsin in 1959. He was promoted to President of the bank in 1966 and remained in that position, with some trust duties, until his retirement on September 30, 1981 at which time he became a member of the law firm of Gottlieb, Johnson, Beam and Joseph.

On February 15, 1941 he was married to Alice Virginia Smith, a teacher in the Zanesville Public Schools. They are the parents of three sons: Donald Clarence, David Alan, and Charles Douglas and the proud grandparents of two granddaughters and two grandsons.

Charles was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Choir member and Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was also a member of the church bowling team and the Zane Trail Kampers.

He was a past President of Zanesville Rotary Club and was former acting director of the Zanesville Area Chamber of Commerce. He was an interim auditor for the City of Zanesville in 1986 and was a member of the Zanesville City Schools Board of Education from 1960 to 1976, having served 10 years as president.

A charter member of the Board of Education of the Muskingum Area Joint Vocational School and Technical Center, he was Chairman of the Board of Muskingum Area Technical College when the two educational facilities separated. Mr. Moody was chairman of the MATC board at the time of his death.

He was past Treasurer of Bethesda Hospital Foundation and a member of the Bethesda Hospital Board of Trustees and past Treasurer of United Way and the old Zanesville Improvement Program.

Charles was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Honor Lodge No. 726, Zanesville on November 29, 1952, serving as Worshipful Master in 1961; District Deputy Grand Master in 1964, 65, and 66 of the 18th Masonic District; exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Zanesville Chapter No. 9 on February 23, 1953. He was greeted in Zanesville Council No. 23 on March 19, 1953 and served as Master, 1967-68. He was knighted in Cyrene Commandery No. 10 on March 10, 1956.

He was a member of the Charter Consistory Class of the Valley of Cambridge, AASR in 1955 and served as Most Wise Master of Cambridge Chapter of Rose Croix in 1967-68-69. He was a member of Grand Council of Knight Masons of Ireland, Kilwinning Council No. 12, Zanesville, serving as Excellent Chief in 1977; Red Cross of Constantine, Holyrood Conclave; and Muskingum Chapter No. 485, O. E. S., Zanesville. He held the Honorary Legion of Honor of the International Order of DeMolay.

He was Coroneted Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33rd degree, in Atlantic City, September 28, 1968 and was crowned an active member in September 1973 and Deputy for Ohio in 1981. He was a member of Aladdin Temple, Columbus. He was the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of New York near the Grand Lodge of Ohio and served as First V. P. of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Masonic Home.

He was elected Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Ohio in 1973 and remained in this office until elected and installed as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ohio on October 16, 1981. Following his term as Grand Master, he was again elected Grand Treasurer in October 1982, a position he held until his death.

M. W. Brother Moody passed away April 14, 1986 in Zanesville following surgery. Honor Lodge No. 726 held Masonic services in Zanesville April 16, 1986. Funeral services were held April 17, 1986 at the Bryan Funeral Home with interment at Memorial Park, Military Road, Zanesville, Ohio.
