1979 – Daniel Frederick Iceman

Daniel Frederick Iceman was born June 27, 1924 at Treaton Station, Jeromesville, Ashland County, Ohio, the son of Charles L. and Viola Bowman Iceman. He attended elementary schools at Nashville, Holmes County, Ohio and Longfellow School in Massillon, Ohio. He received his junior and senior high school education at Jackson Memorial Township High School in Stark County, Ohio, graduating in June 1942. He served as class President all four years of high school. He served in the United States Army from January 1943 until April 1946, with 24 months in Europe. After 28 years of service, he retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, W-4, in 1970.

Daniel was married on September 26, 1953 to Shirley L. Ryneer. They have four daughters and a son. They are the grandparents of eight children. They are members of Saint James Episcopal Church in Wooster where he has served on the vestry and was Church Treasurer for eighteen years.

M. W. Brother Iceman has been employed with the Gerstenslager Manufacturing Company in Wooster since June 1946. On July 1, 1978 he was appointed Director of Manufacturing for the Custom Truck and Trailer Division. He has been active in veterans affairs in the city of Wooster, is a member of the American Legion, a Past Commander of Wooster Post No. 68, and a member of the Reserve Officer Association.

Most Worshipful Brother Iceman was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on January 8, 1958 in Ebenezer Lodge No. 33, Wooster, and served as Worshipful Master in 1968. In the York Rite he was exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Wooster Chapter No. 27 on May 7, 1959 and served as Excellent High Priest in 1974. He was received as a Royal and Select Master in Wooster Council No. 13 on March 2, 1971, and was created a Knight Templer in Wooster Commandery No. 48 on May 11, 1971.

He became a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, November 1, 1969. He was appointed Captain of the Guard, Brenton Chapter of Rose-Croix in 1972. He was crowned Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Honorary 33rd Degree Mason, in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 25, 1974.

He became a member of Al Koran Temple, Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine on June 16, 1973 and is a member of Wooster Shrine Club. He is also a member of Wooster Chapter No. 270, Order of the Eastern Star. He holds honorary memberships in several Ohio Lodges. He is a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees of the United States, the Royal Order of Scotland, Knight Masons of Ireland and National Sojourners. He is the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Illinois near the Grand Lodge of Ohio.

In October 1969 he was appointed District Deputy Grand Master for the 20th Masonic District by M. W. Brother Louis C. Holzapfel. He was reappointed to that office in October 1970 by M. W. Brother Donald M. Thomson and again in October 1971 by M. W. Brother Fay L. Gullion.

In May 1972 he was appointed to the Office of Junior Grand Deacon by M. W. Brother Fay L. Gullion. He was subsequently appointed Senior Grand Deacon in October 1972, Grand Marshal in 1973 and Grand Orator in 1974. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in October 1975, Senior Grand Warden in 1976 and Deputy Grand Master in 1977. On October 21, 1978 he was elected and installed as Grand Master of Masons in Ohio.
