Committed to the Craft: A Conversation with Grand Master Shawn Johnson

Part 1 – Outlook for the Year

When MWB Shawn Johnson was installed as Grand Master of Ohio Freemasons, he chose a theme that captures the heart of the fraternity: Committed to the Craft.

In this first installment of our Q&A, he shares what that commitment means to him, his focus for the year, and the values that continue to shape his leadership.

Congratulations on becoming the new Grand Master! What are you most looking forward to this year?

I am truly honored. What I’m most looking forward to this year is working closely with all of our Brethren by supporting our lodges, strengthening our ritual, and continuing to build meaningful connections in our communities.

Freemasonry has always been at its best when we are actively engaged in the Craft and in each other’s lives. I’m excited to help inspire that involvement, celebrate the good work already being done, and ensure that every member feels valued and proud to be a Mason. It’s going to be a great year, and I’m committed to the Craft.

How does it feel to take on this role and lead Ohio Masonry?

It is both an extraordinary honor and a profound responsibility. The Brethren of Ohio have entrusted me with the leadership of a fraternity that has shaped lives, strengthened communities, and upheld timeless values for generations.

I’m humbled by that trust. There’s pride in stepping into this role, but also a clear understanding of the work ahead. Freemasonry makes an impact when it’s lived through our obligations- supporting one another, improving ourselves, and making a positive impact where we live and work.

The dedication of our Brethren gives me confidence that together we’ll not only preserve the strong legacy of Ohio Freemasonry but also help it thrive for the future.

Tell us about your focus for the year. Why is this important to you?

My focus is centered around strengthening our connection to the Craft, both within our lodges and out in our communities. We’re placing renewed emphasis on member engagement, ritual excellence, and living our values beyond the tiled door.

When our Brethren feel informed, involved, and inspired, the lodge becomes more than a place we visit, it becomes a place we belong. A key part of that is improving the candidate experience. A man’s first impression as he steps into a Masonic temple should reflect the pride we take in our Craft: a warm welcome, a sense of dignity, and the feeling that something important is about to happen.

Freemasonry has never been intended as a passive experience. It’s a journey of growth, service, and fellowship. By focusing on engagement, accountability, and exceptional candidate development, we reinforce and strengthen our fraternity for generations to come.

Do you have any specific programs or events planned to support this focus?

The programs and events this year are designed to strengthen our lodges, empower our members, and deepen our connection to our communities.

First, we’ll place strong emphasis on leadership development– expanding opportunities for officer education, mentorship, and practical skills that help lodges thrive.

Second, we’ll work to increase the visibility and impact of Freemasonry. That means continuing programs that honor veterans and first responders, building partnerships with local organizations, and encouraging civic service. When our neighbors see Masons working side-by-side to make a difference, trust and interest in the Craft naturally follow.

Third, we’ll enrich the Masonic experience itself. Elevating ritual, improving lodge culture, and supporting events that strengthen fellowship, from table lodges to family gatherings.

Finally, we’ll focus on brotherly accountability. Holding one another to our obligations and ensuring every Brother’s journey is meaningful.

What from your personal or professional life will you bring to this leadership position?

Throughout my life I’ve been shaped by experiences that taught me service, humility, and perseverance. Professionally, I’ve worked in roles that require organization, strategic planning, and bringing people together around shared purpose.

My time in the United States Army profoundly influenced who I am. It instilled discipline, accountability, and dedication to those I serve alongside. The Army taught me to remain calm under pressure, to lead by example, and never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself. Most importantly, it reinforced the importance of brotherhood, something that resonates deeply within our Masonic ideals.

Freemasonry has been a constant source of growth and inspiration. Traveling the state and engaging with lodges big and small has given me deep appreciation for the strength and character of Ohio Freemasonry.

I bring not only experience but a genuine belief in our Craft and its power to inspire men to be better, serve their communities, and uphold timeless values. I will work tirelessly to honor the trust the Brethren have placed in me and to lead with integrity, compassion, and commitment to the Craft.
